Jannik Sinner claimed the 2024 US Open title on Sunday, defeating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. After securing match point, the Italian celebrated by raising his arms and acknowledging the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sinner had faced a doping controversy at the start of the tournament when it was revealed that he had tested positive twice for an anabolic agent in March. However, he avoided a ban as an independent tribunal accepted his defense that the positive tests were due to unintentional contamination.
Despite the controversy, Sinner stayed focused and made history as the first Italian man to win the US Open. In his post-match interview, he addressed the doping issue and dedicated his victory to his ailing aunt.
“This title means so much to me; the recent phase of my career has not been easy. I have my team and those close to me who support me every day,” Sinner said.
“I love tennis and work hard for moments like these, but there’s also life off the court. I want to dedicate this title to my aunt, whose health is really struggling. I don’t know how much longer I’ll have her in my life, so it’s wonderful to share a positive moment with her,” he added.
Currently ranked world No. 1 in singles, Sinner has now won 16 singles titles on the ATP Tour, including two Grand Slams—the 2024 Australian Open and the 2024 US Open. He was also a finalist at the ATP Finals and led Italy to the 2023 Davis Cup victory.
At the 2024 Australian Open, Sinner reached his first Grand Slam final after defeating Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, then went on to win his maiden major title by overcoming Daniil Medvedev in a dramatic five-set comeback.
