Oscars 2024
India has initiated the process of selecting its official entry for the Oscars 2024. Reports suggest that films such as ‘Balagam,’ ‘The Kerala Story’ by Vivek Agnihotri, ‘Zwigato’ by Kapil Sharma, and ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ by Karan Johar are being considered as potential entries for India at the Academy Awards.
A 17-member committee, headed by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli, has been formed for this purpose. This committee is currently reviewing films through screenings in Chennai, having received over 22 entries from across India.
Contending Films
Several films have been submitted to the Film Federation of India for consideration as India’s official Oscar entry. These include Anant Mahadevan’s ‘The Storyteller’ (Hindi), ‘Music School’ (Hindi), ‘Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway’ (Hindi), ’12th Fail’ (Hindi), ‘Viduthalai Part 1’ (Tamil), ‘Ghoomer’ (Hindi), and ‘Dasara’ (Telugu), among others. Additional entries like ‘Vaalvi’ (Marathi), ‘Gadar 2’ (Hindi), ‘Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose’ (Hindi), and ‘Baap Lyok’ (Marathi) are also being considered.

Indian Success at the Oscars
India had notable success at the Oscars earlier this year, with the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ from SS Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ winning the Best Original Song, and Guneet Monga’s ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ securing the Best Documentary (Short Subject) award. These victories have bolstered confidence among Indian filmmakers, leading to a diverse range of entries for consideration at the Oscars, spanning commercial, regional, and serious cinema.
Previous Oscar Entry
In the previous year, Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film, ‘Last Film Show’ (Chhello Show), was India’s official entry in the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards.
As India eagerly awaits the announcement of its official Oscars 2024 entry, the diverse array of films being considered reflects the country’s rich cinematic tapestry, and filmmakers are optimistic about making their mark on the international stage.
