Frank Rubio’s Return to Earth After Record-Breaking Mission
NASA astronaut Frank Rubio has completed his historic space mission and returned to Earth after spending a record-breaking 371 days in space. He, along with two Russian cosmonauts, Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin, safely landed in Kazakhstan aboard the Russian Soyuz MS-23 capsule.
Frank Rubio’s journey in space turned out to be much longer than initially planned. Originally slated for a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station, he extended his stay due to a coolant leak on his original spacecraft. This extended mission set a new record for the longest duration a US astronaut has spent in microgravity, marking a significant achievement in space exploration.
Astronaut of Salvadoran Origin
Frank Rubio’s mission also held personal significance as he became the first American of Salvadoran origin to travel to low-Earth orbit. His journey represented a momentous milestone for diversity in space exploration.

In an interview, Rubio candidly expressed that if he had known his mission would double in duration, he might have declined the assignment due to important family events. The sacrifices and challenges of extended space travel were not taken lightly.
Return Journey and Homecoming
After landing in Kazakhstan, Rubio is expected to continue his journey home to Houston. This return marks the end of a mission. It covered a staggering 157.4 million miles. It also included 5,963 orbits around the Earth.
Frank Rubio surpassed the previous record for the longest stay in space by a US astronaut, previously held by NASA’s Mark Vande Hei. Vande Hei’s record of 355 days was eclipsed by Rubio’s 371 days.

Rubio’s journey to the International Space Station was part of a ride-sharing agreement with Roscosmos. It was between NASA and Russia. This cooperation ensured continued access to the space station for both the United States and Russia, even in the event of spacecraft issues.
Space Debris Threat
During his mission, the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft experienced a coolant leak. It was likely caused by a micrometeorite or orbital debris collision. The growing risk of space debris in low-Earth orbit is a challenge.
Adapting to Life on Earth
Upon his return, Rubio acknowledged that it might take several months to readjust to life on Earth. It is due to the effects of long-term microgravity exposure. However, he looks forward to experiencing the simplicity and tranquility of life on our planet.
