Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife wins cancer battle with diet: Is this even possible?

In a remarkable turn of events, former cricketer and politician Navjot Singh Sidhu shared the inspiring news of his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s victory over stage 4 cancer, despite initial odds of only 5% survival. Speaking at a press conference following her 40-day hospital stay, Sidhu attributed her recovery to an unwavering commitment to dietary discipline.

“She defeated cancer not because we had money but because she was disciplined and followed a strict diet routine,” Sidhu revealed, detailing a comprehensive nutrition plan that included lemon water, raw turmeric, apple cider vinegar, neem leaves, and tulsi. The regimen also incorporated various citrus fruits and nutritious juices from pumpkin, pomegranate, amla, and beetroot, complemented by walnuts.

However, medical experts have stepped forward to provide crucial context to this recovery story. Dr. Mandeep Singh Malhotra, Director of Surgical Oncology at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, emphasized the complexity of cancer treatment: “While diet significantly supports recovery, it cannot replace traditional cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Cancer is multifaceted, requiring a combination of therapies to target its complex biology.”

The role of fasting in cancer treatment, which Sidhu advocated, has sparked particular debate among healthcare professionals. Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, a renowned hepatologist known as the Liver Doc, strongly cautioned against such practices on social media: “It is criminal to impose intermittent fasting or any fasting diets on cancer patients. It literally robs them of the nutrition they require for recovery, tolerate cancer meds, and prevent infections looking to kill them.”

Dr. Malhotra elaborated on the nuanced approach needed in cancer treatment: “Claims of dietary interventions as standalone treatments are not universally applicable. Patients should combine dietary strategies with evidence-based medical care for optimal outcomes, ensuring close collaboration with healthcare providers.”

While celebrating the Sidhu family’s victory over cancer, medical professionals emphasize the importance of a balanced approach combining proper nutrition with conventional medical treatments. “Patients should adopt a diet rich in proteins, healthy fats, and low-glycemic carbohydrates to support energy needs and minimise cancer cell growth,” Dr. Malhotra advised, stressing the need for personalized treatment plans developed in consultation with oncologists and dietitians.
