A heated political controversy has erupted after Telangana minister Konda Surekha’s remarks about the divorce of popular actors Samantha Prabhu and Naga Chaitanya, drawing sharp reactions from both political leaders and film personalities. Now, even politicians have come up to attack the Telangana Minister and her party – Congress.
Ashwini Vaishnaw on Konda’s divorce dig
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw strongly condemned the comments, characterizing them as a reflection of “the anti-woman mindset of the Congress.”
In a pointed statement on X, Vaishnaw challenged the opposition’s leadership: “Silence of Mr Rahul Gandhi and the top Congress leadership shows they support such remarks.” He emphasized that the BJP considers the entertainment industry “the pride of India.”
How did this controversy evoke?
The controversy ignited when Surekha allegedly accused Telangana’s BRS leader KT Rama Rao (KTR) of interfering in celebrities’ personal lives, specifically claiming his involvement in the Prabhu-Chaitanya separation. The remarks, which quickly went viral, also referenced veteran actor Nagarjuna, Chaitanya’s father.
Samantha Prabhu swiftly responded, asserting that her divorce was a mutual decision without political involvement. Nagarjuna issued a strong statement, urging the minister to “respect other people’s privacy” and refrain from using film stars’ personal lives for political criticism. The veteran actor has since filed a defamation complaint against Surekha.
Telangana Minister apologises amid Backlash
Following the backlash, Surekha retracted her statements, expressing regret for any distress caused to Prabhu and her family. However, the incident has already sparked wider discussions about the intersection of entertainment and politics in India.
The controversy has drawn particular attention as it involves Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Prabhu, who announced their separation in 2021. Chaitanya has since become engaged to actor Sobhita Dhulipala in August 2023.
The incident highlights the delicate balance between public interest and personal privacy in Indian politics and entertainment while raising questions about the appropriate boundaries of political discourse.
