Minor Kidnapped and Murder in Bengal: BJP alleges Sexual Assualt, sparks Protest

A minor girl’s death in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district has triggered violent protests and political controversy, leading to the torching of a police camp and widespread demonstrations.

What happened in Bengal?

The victim, who disappeared while returning from her coaching class in Mahishamari on Friday, was found dead in a field early Saturday morning around 3:30 AM. Her body reportedly showed multiple injuries. The family had filed a missing person’s complaint Friday night when she failed to return home.

“She had informed me that she would head home after the class,” the victim’s father stated, describing how the family approached local law enforcement after finding she hadn’t returned home. Police claim they initiated an investigation immediately upon receiving the complaint.

Authorities have arrested 19-year-old Mostakin Sardar in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder. However, tension continues to grip the area, with protesters wielding sticks and brooms taking to the streets, prompting substantial police deployment.

BJP demands Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation

The incident has sparked political controversy, with BJP State President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation. “Durga Puja celebrations are days away and such crimes are taking place in the state with innocent girls as the victims,” Majumdar stated, adding, “Mamata Banerjee has no control over the administration, which has become completely political.”

Is this also a rape and murder case?

The case comes amid ongoing criticism of the state government’s handling of another recent tragedy – the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August.

While the BJP claims this is a case of rape and murder, police officials maintain that confirmation of sexual assault awaits post-mortem results. Law enforcement continues to monitor the situation as protests persist in the area.
