Magnus Carlsen Gets Defeated By a 9-Year-Old Chess Prodigy

Widely regarded as one of the greatest chess grandmasters of all time, Magnus Carlsen holds the highest peak rating in history at 2882. He has been ranked World No. 1 in the FIDE rankings since July 2022 and is second only to Garry Kasparov in terms of time spent as the top-rated chess player. Recently, the Norwegian champion has made headlines, though for controversial reasons, as his FCPC organization remains embroiled in a dispute with FIDE.

However, Carlsen also grabbed attention during a recent Bullet Brawl match on Chess.com last Saturday. Playing with the black pieces against an account named ‘Nayemhaque22,’ Carlsen surprised fans by resigning after 50 moves, losing 16 rating points. Bullet Brawl is a fast-paced event for titled players, with a one-minute time control and no increments. The twist? Carlsen’s opponent turned out to be a nine-year-old boy, Ryan Rashid Mugdha, from Bangladesh.

A Sensational Claim

FIDE Master Naim Haque from Bangladesh later revealed that his student, Ryan, had defeated Carlsen in the online tournament.

Sharing the news on social media, Haque wrote, “He (Ryan Rashid Mugdha) couldn’t play in Bullet Brawl because he doesn’t have a title. So, I gave my Chess.com ID. He played and beat the 5-time world champion and current No. 1 chess player in all three formats, Magnus Carlsen.”

It’s worth noting that allowing someone else to use your account in such events violates Chess.com’s terms, and the platform has yet to release an official statement on the matter.

In an interview with Business Standard, Mugdha shared his thoughts on the victory, saying, “The bullet format is my favorite. I love the urgency it brings—you have to think and act very quickly. When I realized I was matched with Carlsen, I was starstruck, but I didn’t back down. After he made a mistake with his queen, I knew I was in a strong position. I played naturally, just as I would against any opponent.”

Ryan’s coach, Haque, added, “When Mugdha got his FIDE rating at five, it was a world record at the time. That record was later broken, but it remains a significant achievement.”
