MS Dhoni Set To Join Sachin As India Great With Retired Jersey No.7

Indian cricket is poised to bestow another historic honor upon legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni by retiring his iconic national team jersey no. 7. As per reports, the BCCI has decided that no player going forward can don the no.7 made famous by Dhoni during his trophy-laden captaincy stint.

The move, once formalized, will make Dhoni only the second Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to earn a retired jersey number. It reflects his unmatched contribution as one of India’s greatest matchwinners and captains through the 2000s and early 2010s.

Four years since his last international match during the infamous 2019 World Cup exit, the BCCI feels the time is right to immortalize Dhoni’s jersey no.7. It carries much emotional value for his countless fans worldwide thanks to indelible moments like the 2011 World Cup triumph.

“The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game,” a senior Board official revealed to Indian Express. “A new player can’t get No. 7.”

Beyond just trophies, Dhoni transformed Indian cricket with his selfless leadership. He backed young talents, took bold decisions, and often sacrificed his batting position for the team’s benefit – traits that earned deep admiration.

Once the jersey retirement gets approved, players and fans going forward will forever associate India’s no.7 shirt with MS Dhoni – the small-town boy who became ‘Captain Cool’ and one of cricket’s shrewdest minds.

It will serve as a constant reminder of his indelible impact on the sport in the 21st century. More importantly, it immortalizes Dhoni as an all-time great deserving of the prestigious honor.
