Google Chromebook Plus Launched: Includes AI-Powered Features

Google has unveiled its latest Google Chromebook Plus lineup, priced at $399, introducing a new category of laptops designed to boost productivity with AI-powered features and specific hardware specifications. This range of Chromebooks, produced by Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo, comes with specific hardware requirements set by Google to ensure optimal performance when running productivity software and AI features.

Google Chromebook Hardware

The Chromebook Plus devices are required to have a processor powered by Intel Core i3 12th Gen or higher, or AMD Ryzen 3 7000 series or higher. They must also include a minimum of 8GB of RAM. Further, a storage capacity of 128GB or more, a 1080p resolution, or a better webcam with Temporal Noise Reduction. Lastly, a high-quality Full HD IPS display. These specifications are intended to enhance the overall functionality and capabilities of the Chromebook Plus.

Video Conferencing Features

Google is enhancing video conferencing capabilities on Chromebook Plus devices with a dedicated control panel for quick microphone and camera control. AI-powered features include improved lighting, noise cancellation, background blur, and live captions. Automatic file synchronization for Google Drive is also being enabled, ensuring easy access to files even without an internet connection.

Google Photos Updates

The Plus devices will receive various updates for Google Photos, including Magic Eraser for object removal, HDR, portrait blur, and automatic movie creation from photos and videos. While some of these features may eventually be available on other Chromebooks, Google initially plans to make them exclusive to the Chromebook Plus category.

Partnerships and Subscriptions

Google has partnered with Adobe and LumaTouch to offer software such as Photoshop, Adobe Express, and LumaFusion. New Chromebook Plus buyers will receive three months of free subscriptions to Photoshop and Express. Additionally, all new Chromebook Plus devices will come with a three-month subscription to Nvidia’s GeForce NOW Priority tier cloud gaming service.

Upcoming AI-Powered Features

Google intends to introduce AI-powered features to Chromebook Plus, including a writing assistant that works across various websites. Users will also be able to create AI-generated wallpapers based on prompts, a feature previously announced for Android.

Software Updates

Google is extending its offer of 10 years of software updates to older devices that meet the Chromebook Plus profile. This ensures long-term support and continued updates for Chromebook users.
