Google Chrome Users in High risk: The Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In), operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has issued a crucial warning to Google Chrome users in India. 

The warning pertains to multiple high-risk vulnerabilities discovered in Google ChromeOS LTS. It could potentially be exploited by remote attackers to cause significant harm to the targeted systems. Further are the details of this cybersecurity threat and offer guidance to mitigate the risks.

High-Risk Vulnerabilities in Google ChromeOS LTS

CERT-In has identified several vulnerabilities within Google ChromeOS LTS. These vulnerabilities pose serious risks and include:

  • Use-after-free in Extensions
  • Heap buffer overflow in vp8 encoding in Ibvpx
  • Out-of-bounds memory access in FedC
  • Flaws in AMD platforms
  • Issues in the Linux Kernel

Among others, the agency specifically noted the vulnerability labeled CVE-2023-5217 as one being exploited in the wild. These vulnerabilities could allow remote attackers to trigger a denial of service condition, elevate their privileges, and even execute code on the compromised system.

Immediate Action Required: Update Your Chrome Browser:

To safeguard against these vulnerabilities, users are strongly advised to update their Chrome browser promptly. Google has already released an update that contains patches and solutions to address these security concerns. To update your Google Chrome browser, follow these steps:

  • Open Chrome.
  • Click on the three-dot menu located in the top left corner.
  • Select ‘Help’ from the dropdown menu.
  • Click on ‘About Google Chrome.’
  • Google Chrome will automatically check for available updates and install them.
  • Once the update is complete, you will receive a confirmation message, stating “Google Chrome is up to date.”
